Market Research and Industry Analysis Links:

A number of great sources for data and analysis in the consumer electronics space exist out there. Of course, in most cases, these will provide answers to only general questions, with more specific questions and strategic/tactical application requiring additional services. (Of course, that's where The Market Sage fits in.) But these are great ways to gain a better understanding of the landscape and opportunities.

  • If you aren't a member of Consumer Electronics Association yet, you should be. CEA provides a wealth of consumer research and annual factory shipment volumes on nearly 100 products for free to its members. Additional detailed data and forecasts are available for subscription.  Check out www.CE.org.

  • CEA also has a custom research arm called eBrain, where you can go for targeted primary research, such as surveys or focus groups. Check them out at www.ebrain.com.

  • Truly the only source for data on retail sales of CE products is NPD, Inc. They also offer consumer research to a dedicated online panel. Visit them at www.npd.com.

  • Several big firms offer research, analysis, and forecasts for specific sectors of CE. This includes Gartner (www.gartner.com), Forrester Group (www.forrester.com), Yankee Group (www.yankeegroup.com), and IDC (www.idc.com). In each case you will also find knowledgeable analysts who avidly write and speak about the specific areas of expertise.

  • Infotrends is a full service/syndicated research firm that focuses specifically on the digital imaging market. They offer consumer research and market data on this sector. www.infotrends.com

  • Another firm with specific sector expertise is Telematics Research Group (TRG). As the name implies, TRG specializes in all things automotive electronics, with particular emphasis on factor installed systems and a large database of autos and their installed electronics. www.telematicsresearch.com

  • For surveys on consumer purchases and brand recall check out Synovate (www.synovate.com) and NPD (www.npd.com).
